From St. Charles to Dixon Hall: Tulane Bands in Spring 2027
Tulane Bands is looking ahead to a busy spring, with four Mardi Gras parades and our annual spring concert on the schedule.
The Tulane University Marching Band will march in the Krewe of Excalibur’s 25th anniversary parade in Metairie on Friday, January 29; Krewe d’État on Friday, February 5; Bacchus on Sunday, February 7; and Rex on Tuesday, February 9. Volunteers are always welcome to join us along the route. Watch Tulane Bands’ social media in December for signup links.
Our spring concert will occur on Friday, April 16 at 7pm in Dixon Hall. The Tulane Concert Band will perform Los Carnavales, a new work by composer Dennis Llinás, as part of an international commissioning consortium organized by Thomas Verrier. Inspired by the Carnival celebrations of Barranquilla, Colombia, the piece brings together musical styles including joropo, fandango, mapalé, and cumbia.
The consortium’s purpose extends beyond commissioning new music: each participating U.S. ensemble helps provide a complete score and set of parts to a band in Latin America. It creates access to contemporary repertoire and builds connections among musicians across borders. For Tulane Bands, Los Carnavales also offers a meaningful point of connection between New Orleans’ Carnival traditions and Barranquilla’s vibrant celebration of music and culture.
