Green Wave Brass Band
The Green Wave Brass Band (GWBB) is a select Tulane Bands ensemble that studies, rehearses, and performs New Orleans Traditional Jazz and Modern Brass Band music through an immersive learning and playing experience. Under the direction of Andy Bower and Andrew Szypula, the Tulane and Loyola University students in the GWBB learn and study the musical traditions of New Orleans by working and performing side-by-side with professional New Orleans musicians and culturebearers. Musicians from acts such as Rebirth Brass Band, Hot 8 Brass Band, Big 6 Brass Band, TBC Brass Band and others have sat in with our students at performances and rehearsals.
The GWBB is a favorite in the Glazer Family Club at Tulane football games and performs for numerous campus recruiting and sporting events. Off campus, the band keeps a busy performing schedule for weddings, birthdays, parades, conventions, and more!
In 2023, the GWBB recorded an LP titled Sugar Bowl Parade to commemorate the return of a 1932 drumhead to the band. The hand-painted calfskin bass drum head belonged to Godfrey Hirsch, who performed in legendary New Orleans clarinetist Pete Fountain’s band and wrote the tune of the same name. GWBB Clarinetist Sona Shirinian learned the original Pete Fountain record for our cover in the video linked above. This LP is featured in the New Orleans Public Library’s “Crescent City Sounds” collection and is available on all major streaming platforms.
