A Sisterly Spotlight in Yulman
For Tulane feature twirler Iris Hatchett, the pregame performance against the University of South Alabama was more than a chance to take the field; it was an opportunity to share it with her sister, Lily, a senior at the University of South Alabama. The sisters have twirled together for nine years, and Tulane vs. USA on September 12th marked their final time performing side by side in Yulman Stadium.
Iris first picked up a baton by following Lily’s example. “Looking back, picking up a baton and following in my sister’s footsteps was one of the best decisions I have ever made,” she said. Twirling has garnered Iris lasting friendships and opportunities around the world.
In 2023, Iris competed at the Nations Cup and World Championships in Liverpool, England, earning fifth place with her team. In 2025, she and her duet partner won silver at the competitions in Turin, Italy. That year, Iris was also one of ten baton twirlers selected to travel to Peru as an athletic ambassador, where she represented the United States and partnered with local charities and the Lions Club.
Her recent honors include first place in two-baton at the national qualifiers, first place in three events at the Louisiana State Championships, 2026 College Miss Majorette of Louisiana, and 2025 Miss Majorette of the Southeast. She has qualified for the Inspiration Cup and World Championships and plans to return to Italy in spring 2027.
At Tulane, Iris studies classical studies, serves on the School of Liberal Arts Dean’s Advisory Board, and is secretary of the Classics Club. She hopes to pursue a doctorate and one day take part in archaeological fieldwork.
