New Orleans may be best known as the birthplace of Jazz music. The influences of African and Caribbean cultures were woven through the city’s musical traditions and jazz music eventually branched out into what would define R&B, Rock and Roll, and Funk music. Names like Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Ernie K-Doe, The Neville Brothers, and Allen Toussaint broke out to become international stars and cemented New Orleans as a city of Funk. 

Today, the Tulane University Marching Band celebrates the masters of New Orleans Funk music with selections by Dr. John, the Meters, and Rebirth Brass Band. The TUMB welcomes Grammy Award-winning drummer, educator, and performer Stanton Moore as a Guest Artist to deliver the funky rhythms of the city to Benson Field.

Repertoire:

The show begins with a medley of the Music of Mac Rebennack, a.k.a Dr. John. Written by Randy Newman and recorded by Dr. John, “Down in New Orleans” was the title track for Disney’s 2009 Animated Feature Film, “The Princess and the Frog.” Next, “Right Place, Wrong Time” was The Nite Tripper’s biggest commercial hit, reaching number nine on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1973. 

The Meters defined the R&B and Funk sound of the late 1960s and ‘70s. An homage to Black Masking Mardi Gras Indians, “Hey Pocky A-Way" peaked at number 31 on the U.S. R&B Chart in 1974 and is considered a standard of Funk music all over the world. 

The show closes with the driving rhythms of modern Brass Band music that combined traditional New Orleans music with modern R&B, Rock, and Funk influences to create one of the most recognizable sounds in the streets of the city. Rebirth Brass Band’s tune “AP Touro” is an up-tempo chart guaranteed to get you out of your seat.

Guest Artist: Stanton Moore
Stanton Moore is a Grammy award-winning drummer, educator and performer born and raised in New Orleans. He is especially connected to his hometown, its culture and collaborative spirit. In the early ‘90s, Moore helped found the New Orleans-based essential funk band Galactic who continue to amass a worldwide audience via recording and touring globally. The band has averaged 100 shows a year for the last 25 years. 

In 2018, Moore and his bandmates in Galactic pooled their resources to purchase the internationally renown music venue Tipitina’s. 

Moore launched his solo career in 1998. He has 8 records under his own name. 

Moore’s most recent records are Krasno / Moore Project’s “Book of Queens with Grammy award winning guitarist and producer Eric Krasno. Galactic’s “Audience With The Queen” featuring New Orleans Soul Queen Irma Thomas. 

Throughout his 25 year career, Moore has played and or recorded with a diverse group of artists including Maceo Parker, Joss Stone, Irma Thomas, Leo Nocentelli and George Porter (of the Meters),Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine), Corrosion of Conformity, Donald Harrison Jr., Nicholas Payton, Trombone Shorty, Skerik, Charlie Hunter, Robert Walter, Will Bernard, Ivan Neville, Anders Osborne, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Les Claypool (Primus) to name a few.
